Quarterly News Letter
Dear Students and Friends,
We are thankful for all of God’s blessings but most of all for the salvation He has provided for us in his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. We are looking forward to another school term here at John Leland Baptist College. Attached is a copy of the class schedule for the Winter Quarter.
Let me begin by introducing our newest faculty member: Bro. Paul David Brown, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Independence, KY. Bro. Brown will be teaching NT 311 The Gospel of John (Part One: Chapters 1-10) this winter quarter at our North Campus in Bromley, Ky at the Pleasant View Baptist Church. Before Bro. Brown was saved, he studied at the University of Central Oklahoma where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. After his conversion, he was called into the Gospel ministry in 2000. He studied under Pastor Paul Brown Sr. and was ordained by Sherwood Baptist Church, Newcastle, OK in May 2006. He served as associate pastor at the Sherwood Baptist Church and then under Pastor Bill Brown at the Carmichael Baptist Church in Carmichael, CA. In 2009 Bro Brown was called to pastor the First Baptist Church of Independence, KY where he is currently Pastor. Bro. Brown is an excellent Bible teacher, and we here at Leland welcome him to our faculty.
Because the Life of Christ as presented in the Gospel of John is so vitally important we have made NT 311 the Gospel of John a 4 credit hour course. Part one is a two credit hour course which meets Tuesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 7:50 PM. Part Two of this class will be offered in the Spring Quarter 2012. For more information about this class and other courses, please see the schedule below.
Here at John Leland great stress is placed on the study of the original languages of the Bible, and so we are excited to offer GK 101 Elementary Greek I which will be held on Thursday evenings in Georgetown, KY at Grace Baptist Church. This is an introductory level course into the language God used to write the New Testament. There is hardly a more important area of study for the preacher, the Sunday School teacher, or the serious Christian than this language. Some men today disparage the value of the study of Greek, but there is no other subject that can give the confidence and conviction into the meaning of the New Testament like a working knowledge of Greek. We expect doctors and lawyers to have a technical knowledge of medicine and law, so surely the man who would attempt to expound the Word of God formally from a pulpit ought to have the same technical knowledge of his field. God has given us a Book, and preachers—if no one else—need to be “specialists” in the words in which it was written. We believe as a preacher of old once said, “No man can truly be a theologian who is not first a philologian.”
To the Pastors of churches within driving distance of Northern Kentucky and Georgetwon I ask that you help us get the word out about John Leland. Please tell your church and especially your young people about the college and the classes being offered this quarter. John Leland College is first and foremost a Bible college, but through our General Studies Program, a student can earn a major concentration or a minor in just about any academic field he or she chooses. This is a great opportunity for any one to earn a college degree in a field of their choice within the Biblical format of a Christian college. For more information about this program, please contact the college. Please remember us in prayer.
Sincerely and in Christ,
Wm. Van Nunen
Dean
